Are you having trouble getting into the holiday spirit? Some people experience grief during the holidays and it just hangs out in the background as they go through the motions and traditions of the season. Grief shows up in so many different ways. Are you suffering from the loss of a loved one or a relationship, the grief from past trauma, the sadness that you cannot give like you want, the yearning to have love, or are you suffering from anger / frustration as you reflect on the past year(s) and have the perception that life has not been working out for you? All of these scenarios manifest as grief and many people do not know that there are tools to help release the grief so the joy of the season and the true essence of themselves can shine through.

One of the most common questions I hear in my office is, "How long will it take for me to feel better?"  I know the patient wants a straight answer but sometimes it is hard to give. Why?  There are so many variables in the healing mechanisms of our bodies.  Your healing journey can be completely different from someone else's journey even if you both have the same health issues. I like to put healing into 4 categories: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual.

The Story of a Big-Hearted Five-Year-Old

I asked our 5-year-old daughter Grace to get rid of toys because she has too many, so she found some she was willing to part with and put them in a little shoe box.  When she brought the box to me I asked her what she would like to do with the toys.  She came up with the idea to give them to sick kids with cancer in the Hospital.

Since health is such a big part of our daily life Grace has grown a heart towards children who struggle with cancer and other serious illness. She believes that giving these children crafts and activities will bring them joy, "so they aren't bored while waiting around all day."  We found out through the Child Life Specialist at the local hospital that they cannot accept anything used, so of course Grace suggested we buy them all NEW toys and activities!  I asked her,  "Well just how many boxes would you like to make?"  I expected her to say 3-4 but instead Grace stated matter-of-factly,...
